I thought i would start a new thread for this, basically the abs light stays on, i did find one faulty sensor lead and repaired that, all sensors equal readings, i have the car booked in on thursday, the guy said if the light does not go out when driven there is obviously still something wrong, and it can get expensive, this is the only thing the car failed mot on, Its the expensive bit i am worried about! first test is £50, can anyone give me any clues as to what costs what? i have read Tompions thread re solder motor connections,in controller, but i dont even know where the controller is! sorry bit extra,== is it possible to get a controler from another car, or one thats already repaired? and swap it over! i could repair it like Tompion did, if that is the problem!and would have a go at it, i was an electrician after all (in the days of steam!)

Bob, Start off by reading This Page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/abssystem.htm) and the relevant other links on the 'buttons' on the left of the page. The ABS unit sits on the top of the drivers side inner wing. On some cars the unit is actually on the wing and on others....lucky devils...it sits just behind the drivers side headlamp. The latter is MUCH easier to remove. Removal of the first type is depicted in one of the links. No doubt Tompion will be about later and he's the guy to advise you. ;) The workshop manual for the ABS is Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/brakesmanual.htm).

Brilliant, :) i have actually seen the ---thing it is there! i cannot contain my exitement! thankyou so much SIMMO
things will now hopefully make sense! i have looked all over the place! i shall have a lie down first, then do some studying :)

Bob, I think the clue to your problem is hopefully answered in the last paragraph on the main page. IF the unit is the later one then the light can only be extinguished by a diagnostic tester with the ability to deal with ABS codes. If yours is the 'easily accessible' one then I'd have a bet on that as the cause as you seem to have dealt with all the other issues and tests. Let's hope so. ;) bear in mind that some of these articles were written before Tompion did his research and soldering mod. Also history has taught us that the front sensors DO NOT come out...or if they do no has reported successfully doing so without destroying them...and in my case...by drilling the thing I caught a tooth on the sensor ring in the hub and had to replace the entire hub with a fitted sensor...thanks to Gozz. ;D

Thanks again SIMMO, Well today after i thought i had cleared the RR sensor short, Its back! so somehow its shorting out again between the controller and the cabin, so i will take the lower trim off under drivers door, cut the two wires, check that the fault is not towards the sensor and rewire direct to the controller, (solder connections and use heat shrink,) however i think you may br right SIMMO, it is not the one that is easily accessable behind headlight, i'm fairly sure it is one that needs to be reset, i will rewire tomorow and see what happens, Thanks Bob

Don’t worry about the paragraph that says codes have to be cleared, I’ve yet to come across a code that prevented the light going out during the rolling test – once everything is working correctly.

One of the motor pins on the controller goes to earth, if you push the pin in all directions with the probe of test meter if it does have a dodgy solder joint you can sometimes get the meter reading to drop to zero.

Yes you can fit another, you don’t even need to fit it to the valve block to test if the light goes out, as long as you can plug in the motor & the multiplug (obviously it won’t function properly but that doesn’t matter as far as the test is concerned). There are 3 types, the MKIV (fitted below the valve block) with or without traction control or the later MK 20 that appears to only come without traction control.

Thanks again guys, With time going by it may be wise to see if i can get another controller, i dont want to have to pay for a re-test at exmas! i think ill get a used one just in case, so will post in wanted section,

Thanks again SIMMO, The car is a 2-9, ultima, but not a cosworth, thanks for the Link, also i have noticed while reading about the abs, wheel sensors, i have read that to clean them it says, remove the bung! or similar! there are no bungs on my car at all! i wonder if that might be causing some problems! i gather the rear sensors will come out for cleaning, so that seems a good place to start, it seems very difficult to get in there to clean round the toothed ring, Thanks Bob

All done. Thanks to the help from simmo and Tompion, I tested the RR sensor and got around 975 ohms, i also tested the LR sensor, and got a similar reading, but i noticed this changed through the day, the readings would vary, which did not make sense at first! Then i realised that the two pairs of wires were shorting to the chassis in the engine bay, so i cut the old wires out, and rewired the sensor supply wires to just under the trim under drivers door, connections soldered, used heat shrink! the light still came on, but i drove it round the block and the light went off! That light was the only mot failure, so managed to get my mot, great don’t know what happened to the old wireing to cause the problem, but the car has been off the road for last 18 months! That is great news Bob! ;D Glad to have helped and I know 'that feeling' when the light goes out!. Magic. I guess the wiring issue is 'just one of those things' with these cars. Time takes it toll together with anything like heat, anti freeze or power steering fluid. Main thing is you've got a ticket for 12 months and gained a lot of knowledge in the process all of which may some day help another member. ;)

Bob, As I said on the phone some wires are joined by a solid brass connector.

Thanks for your trouble Simmo, i have come across similar connectors, not so much on cars, i used to wire control panels for enormous 3 phase motors, for export, for water purification, the control panels were quite long, that type of connection was to save on the amount of wire used i-e one lead from supply end of the board to one multiple connection similar to that, to link all low voltage signal wires from that point. it looked like a spider with many legs! i think the idea of clear heat shrink is very good, and will get some,
