since putting the engine back in there is quite a bad engine oil leak between engine and gearbox and the only thing I can think of is crank seal? - can't see how it could have been disturbed so not sure why it should leak there - checked engine breather which seems clear so not pressurising - any thoughts?

Rocker covers can leak quite badly and run down the back of the engine , otherwise as you suspect.
