Thought I had to mention this - I was driving down to Chelmsford on Saturday and for those of you who know the area, was on the link road which skirts around north Chelmsford, between Boreham and the A130 / A131.

I know the owner won't necesarily have joined here but have I ever seen a Mk1 Granny go so fast - never.

It's rare now to see them at all, but this one was travelling in the opposite direction to me, overtaking a line of 6/7 cars, straight off a roundabout, on a single carriageway. Stupid thing is that the cars it was overtaking were about 25-30 years younger and they weren't hanging around. All I know is that it was, I believe, an M/N reg saloon in daytona yellow.

I think the give away was when it passed me - that certainly weren't no V6 Essex in that one. Christ - did it lift its skirt and go.

Nice to see one on the roads still.

Nice. I know there was a guy who had to move back from South Africa when the troubles started and had his Mk1 imported too, export only model fitted with a V8 - one of the old skool muscle Fords that got exported to SA, Austraila, NZ etc. Similar to the old 'Tina XLE and the Capri Pirhana 8)

If anyones is interested.....the South African MK1 was called the Granada Perana & had a Mustang 5.0, V8 (called a Windsor engine) fitted as standard.

The 3.0, V6 was considered a bit wimpy for the South African market ::)

What version of Mk1 do you have, Johnnycab ?

I bet the V8 you are referring to was what was in the one I saw - blinking shifted, that's for certain.

When you see these beasts, it's hard to believe that they were introduced in '71/'72. They look far too modern. Yes, they're dated now - but they don't look 35 yrs old. Compare these against the equivalent French or German cars at the time, they were streets ahead in appearance.

Although I could be totally wrong here - I didn't think Ford ever placed the V8 into the Cortina. I know that they did to the Capri, the Granny and Sierra (once saw an XR8 of these).

I thought the 3.0 V6 was the largest they fitted to the 'tina. Although I have never been to SA and only spoken to a guy to resided there for a while - it does figure a little since they had a 'tina XR6 and XR6 Interceptor I believe and 6 being the no. of pots.

I once saw a Ford brochure of these - what a beast.

I've just got the wimpy 3.0 V6 version ::)

It could have been the Perana, or could have been a British one that someone has dropped a V8 into...there are a few around :)

Another popular conversion is to drop the Rover 3.5 V8 into it & adding a holley carb :)

P.S...I live in Essex, so I'll keep my eyes peeled ;)

I wouldn't have said the 3.0 is the wimpy version. It's the best British version you can get.

Is yours the earlier or later (more updated) spec because didn't they sort of have a minor revision around mid '70s ? Certainly all the badging changed from the XL, GXL, E to GL & Ghia

Tbh, if it was the Perana, that would be a rare sight - I have more of a gut feeling is was a modified British version with either the 5.0 or 3.5 V8 fitted. It still could have been the 3.0 Essex - but I just don't think those were as quick as what I saw.

I have never seen that one before whilst driving around Essex and you never know where the guy was going anyway. But they are now such a rare sight on the roads, you can pick each one out.

Daz, I was wrong about the 'Tina, the Mk3 XLE marketed in Oz had a 4.1 Inline 6...but I'm sure there was a V8 Mk3 once marketed in SA or NZ, factory cars converted by a company like Basil Green...I'm sure there was :-/

As Jonny rightfully pointed out it was Perana and not Pirhana ::)

I still have the article about the imported Granny V8, the chap was a business rep and was forced to move from SA when the troubles started. I doubt you'll see any on the roads because the article stated that a lot of parts from the conversion were almost impossible to source.
