Title: 1998 Scorpio Estate, 24V Cosworth, Ghia X Post by brokenmachine on Jun 21st, 2015, 6:02pm Hello everyone, I've been a member for a long time but never get time or money for the things I enjoy. As such I must sell my Scorpio as well as some of my other cars. I'm offering it on here first as you have a better idea of what to expect and what questions to ask. Ideally I would like £500 for it but it's a classic and it's been through a few hands, so I've no idea what it's worth to you. Title: Re: 1998 Scorpio Estate, 24V Cosworth, Ghia X Post by brokenmachine on Jun 21st, 2015, 6:03pm The exterior has some age related wear to things like windscreen wipers, rubber mouldings and edging strips. The paintwork is very good overall but it has been rubbed off from the front bumper and will need re-doing on the rear arches after they are repaired. There is a dent in the tailgate just to the upper-right of the number plate, so paint here may need repair after the dent is sorted. The engine... a BOB 24V Cosworth 2.9i - it has a very gentle misfire at low revs and the idle can wander 100-200rpm from norm - i have adjusted it a bit higher than norm and it seems to wander less. At higher revs the misfire isn't there. All the leads produce a spark but I don't have a narrow enough spark plug socket to pull the plugs out and check their condition. I didn't notice the misfire stop when I pulled each individual lead off, it got consistently worse but did not improve. There are some disconnected wiring plugs and some missing relays. My appalling lack of car knowledge means I haven't known where to start investigating these. The OBD doesn't seem to communicate - this may be my lack of expertise again as I bought a cheap n nasty OBD connector from eBay and setup the software as best I could, but I either couldn't communicate at all (wrong settings) or got something like "BATT V (positive) short to ground". I have the exact error written down *somewhere*. I tried at another time with a bluetooth OBD connector and software on my phone, which connected fine but displayed no error codes that would explain the misfire. Most sensor data seemed fine except air intake temp was something like -36 degrees (faulty sensor or wiring inverted?) I'm a mechanic on buses, and even on them my knowledge is poor. I've loved cars since I could garble a word out of my mouth, but my knowledge is shamefully poor. I would have loved to fix this car, even though I never liked the looks since it came out, I've developed a respect for the vehicle as a whole. There was a power steering fluid leak, which must have just been a loose clip because I tightened all hoseclips and checked for cracks etc but couldn't find any, and it hasn't leaked since. Perhaps though, this is a sign of a hose on its way out, because the vehicle was parked up with nearly full lock on at the time this happened and it seems too easy for it to be a loose hose clip :P The tyres are in poor condition simply because the vehicle has stood still for long periods and I haven't kept the tyres inflated all the time. Best to expect that they all need replacing. The interior is in very good condition with the only major niggles being a split seam on the rear bench seat and the steering wheel looking stale / dirty. |

The remote boot release does not work, so you have to use the key in the lock each time. The battery in the key fob is dead too. Speaking of batteries, the Scorpio is currently borrowing a battery from one of my Capris, so will not be included in the sale. The battery connection cables in the engine bay are gerry-rigged and should not be considered safe. The original cable sleeving has split and cracked, so i wrapped that in tape, and bodged on some crocodile type clamps to connect a battery with different terminal posts. It was fine for me just getting it started to move around but not something I would ever do for long term use. So you will need to repair or replace the battery cables. The sump and oil filter are wet. Oil pressure has been fine and I haven't seen engine oil patches on the ground. It's been like this since I got it and I've not had to top up the oil (not that it's been driven more than a mile anyway :P) There's also silicone sealant on the sump. I only hope there is a proper gasket in there too but haven't dismantled the engine to check. Finally (from what I know anyway), the front suspension rubbers look very dry and cracked, I would think they are due for replacement and I had looked into this. The parts were going to be £150-160 new. You will also need to renew track rod ends as some of these are worn out. |
