Air Conditioning Faults

Since owning my Scorpio I hadnt really concerned myself with the air conditioning not blowing good cold air. Anyway I decided yesterday to get a bottle and recharge it as I already have the trigger and gauge mechanism. Even though it was fully at zero I decided I would try and charge and see if it retained it and it seemed it did. Anyway running down the road today I thought I could smell burning brakes. I pulled over to check as i have recently renewed all corners discs and pads there was no issue. Then I saw bit of smoke coming out front grill and looked under bonnet. I had turned engine off when I pulled over but could see small smoke pockets coming off the air conditioning pump front pulley. When clocked I thought clutch on front has been spinning and overheating the ferrodo hence the smell. Anyway put off air con button and luckily it disengaged to allow me to drive home. I put gauge back on and it was reading just into the red pressure wise which is not where it was filled to so I released some pressure and checked with air con button on hoping it was an over pressure problem but front pulley stayed static. This sounds like the pump has seized and I will be checking through the system.

I remember this fault happening on some scorpios in the past. Some of the members used a smaller belt and did away with the A/C but I dont think that is practicable solution. The electronic clutch is repairable i seem to recall but not an easy job. Better off getting a replacement pump. If you search back you might find some more info. It was a long time ago! Good Luck.
