Ford Scorpio 2.9 24v Bonnet catch fix
« on: Jul 22nd, 2009, 4:19pm »

Hi

Thanks to you guys and lots of help from Chieftain I've found a fix for the bonnet release catch problem on the 24v Cosworth.

Thought I'd break out a new thread just in case anyone ever needs to find it.

1 Jack up front of car and remove under-tray.

2 Get a friend who has small hands and is good with a spanner to reach up around behind the bumper in front of the radiator and undo the 6 bolts that hold the grille in place.

2a You also need to undo two bolts that hold tubular reinforcing bars at the rear of the grille.

3 With the grille and bars unbolted you can lift the grille up horizontally and undo the two bolts that hold the bonnet latch onto the bonnet. With these undone you can now open the bonnet leaving the latch behind.

4 With the latch removed you can see the three screws that hold the catch under the cross member. Undo these to get at the catch. We needed to use an impact screwdriver to get these started.

5 Pull the catch mechanism from underneath the cross member and see what kind of problem you have. In my case the wire had simply jumped out of the notch in the release catch lever.

6 We fixed two (rather oversized) cable ties crossed over the wire to hopefully stop it jumping again.

Hope that's of use to someone.

Thanks again Chieftain.

Is there a way of tightening the cable. Cos i had a look at mine and it's hanging lose over the latch. I put the little rubber grommet back in where the  cable goes through the latch but there's about inch and a half play in the cable

Thanks Gazza

Tonyboy - Not sure but isn't the wire secured to the latch in the cabin by a bolt or screw? I'd guess that's a good place to start looking.

After what Chieftain & I have been through I'd recommend you get a couple of cable ties over the catch end of the cable if it's in anyway loose. It's not an expensive fix but it is a mighty frustrating one when the catch fails!
