Anyone fitted a steering rack?

has anyone fitted a steering rack? I have a new one to fit. I havent actually been under the car to take stock but looking at the manual it says you have to drop the subframe to get to it and need special guide pins to refit the subframe in the right place. Are these guides anything special or can i just improvise in true A-Team fashion? Anything else I need to look out for? Any help gratefully received ex-mechanic by the way, before one of you says dont lay under the car when i take the last bolt out! Andy

Yes - I didn't drop the subframe - what manual you looking at?? Not a bad job - apart for getting to some of the pipes - you need the special Scorpio tool (flexible arms and back) if you can't use a pit or ramps! Will email you the instructions I used (supplied by Snoopy!) Good luck Daven

Ok thanks very much, I have big axle stands etc. the 'flexible back' is still recovering from changing the a/c compressor but it should be working again soon!! To answer your question on what manual im using, IM me or email me and i'll tell you more, the subject has been known to cause a few heated discussions on the forums! Thanks Andy

maybe you should now be known as Aliante Mine was the basic without speed sensitive steering - but as far as I know that is just an electrical connection! Things to watch out for. 1. the rubber seals on the end of the pipes, get some spares - if the pipe does not go back square it can damage them! 2. the pipes that connect at the top of the rack are a sod to get to - make sure they are fully home! 3. flush the system thoroughly to clean the new rack! 4. try to get the trackrods back the same - and they go on the correct side (I put new ones on but didn't notice the l & r on the boxes!) To bleed the system I had the engine running and then turned the wheel fully on each lock a few times! You may have to use an adaptor and Hand vacuum pump - I was lucky I guess( but I did stop all the fluid from leeking by stopping the ends of the pipes!) Hope this helps! Daven

To bleed the rack after fitting normal procedure is to turn the steering from lock to lock with the engine running. This allows any air in the system to vent via the reservoir. Fitting is quite an easy job, but the rack will only exit from one side-drivers if i remember correctly. john.n

Done it! absolute doddle! a few bolts, a couple of pipes, one connector and it falls off in your hands! Bled easy, no need for all the 'special tools' quoted in the manual to bleed it. All in all a good mornings work! Thanks guys! Andy
