2.3 ultima Auto stick/panel removal

Have a 97 2.3 ultima and need to get at the wiring in the panel surrounding because the butons and lights are working off and on. I have got most of it off but have to get the gear stick out to really get in there. Has anyone had eny experience with this and have any advice?
