Lidl special and h/lights

One dipped beam lamp failed yesterday, so I thought Id see if Lidl had any of the pairs of H1 +50% lamps left - They had so I picked up 3x boxes, that was until I read in the small print on the case that they were just normal halogen. So I made do with a single pair for £3.99 plus one of the coolant hydrometers and a second one of those rather nifty battery chargers. Once installed it was quite a bit brighter compared to the one remaining working dipped beam. I suspect this was more to do with the lamps being the from new originals and the elements being rather badly frazzled, than any extra output from the Lidl +50% lamps. So I changed both to match[1]. The hydrometer indicated -25 C on testing the company hack, but -40 C on testing the Scorp, so that seems to be working. It would work on the Scorp without extending the end with a short bit of flexible tube due to the rather odd shape of the header tank. This summer I bought one of the special offer chargers, the same as they have on offer now for £12.99. The electronics is inside is identical to an highly regarded unit which sells for £50. So I picked up a second one. They use a rather fancy charging algorythm and your battery can be left on charge all winter without harm with one of these. Connect and forget. They are even known to bring sulphated batteries back from the dead. [1] Access to the lamps proved to be not too bad, providing you know how the system works. Lots of dark plastic down there and not many clues. Directly behind the headlight lamps is a removable plastic cover - at the top of which is a small flat strip. Press the strip down and pull in gently towards the back of the car, once free at the top it just unhooks from two catches at the bottom edge. That should give you access to replace either or both main or dim lamps. Both are held in place by a small wire spring which needs to be unclipped along with the spade terminal. What ever you do, don't touch the glass envelope of the lamp - hold it only by the metal base. I sprayed the small plastic flat strip holding the cover on, with a little white paint to make it a bit easier to identify in the dark.
