Hi, changing the oil on Saturday and was wondering if the sump plug requires any special tools to remove it? Guy.

A lump hammer and a large chisel Seriously, they are made of very soft metal and if its been overtightened or not been out for a while (like yours) it will more than likely round off. Get a new one with the washer from FMD before you begin. (I'm pretty sure the "revised" plug doesnt fit the 24v) Best to use a spanner or socket with 6 sides rather than the 12 sided ones which are more likely to slip clean the plug completely of dort and rust, i like to hammer it on too before I try and turn it. May the Force be with you young Guy

Hi all. Can I surgest if you find any nut/bolt that you can't undo, try to tighting it. This will save the head being rounded of, or werse snap it all together.

never snapped one yet but I've had a hammer and chisel at a few and had heat at a few but the oil boils so be careful, its not recommended or safe!

A good quality 13 mm socket should be ok....as long as the plug is still nicely hexagonal. I've done 3 oil changes since I've had the car (a year) & have never had any problems getting it undone.....& have always been able to re-use the plug & plastic washer.

If it is, or does round off - I find a pair of Stilsons useful as a last resort.

This is what mine looked like last time I removed it. I reckon the garage who did the service before overtightened it a bit don't you? The old type nut with the fibre washer is still available from Ford, and the newer type has a metal washer with a rubber bit to it. I should point out here that the one I had to mutilate to get off was in fact the new 'improved' type

| Nah... hammer and (ex)screwdriver. And careful application of heat too.
