TDi Coolant Header Tank

Any one know much about the cooling system on these ? Heard a 'pop' one day five minutes after switching engine off and had steam coming from under the bonnet. There is a leak from under the header tank where one of the screws goes through. But only once it reaches a certain temperature and the pressure builds up very high. Is there an increase in pressure once the themostat opens or something ? If I were to drill a very small hole in the cap to release all the pressure would the system still function properly ? Used header tank and cap on ebay for £45 plus postage but I'm tight.

Sounds like the header tank has split on the underneath It's quite a common occurance (I've had two go), & the only cure is a new tank I'm affraid £45 is a bit steep...post a request in 'parts wanted'. I'm sure someone will have one for alot cheaper

The system will work without pressure but you risk losing coolant through evaporation and it will boil at a lower temperature which could be disastrous as the diesel lump is prone to warping heads or blowing gaskets if overheated... Darren

It's not on ebay any more so someone must have bought it. Whats the story with the guy in Hornchurch anyway - popular amongst the forum members is he ? May just try a Blue Peter bodge with an empty washing up bottle and some sticky back plastic

I was at one of our local breakers on Saturday. (Albert Looms of Derby) and they had a TD estate in. Unfortunately the engine/gearbox complete and cooling system complete were already gone from it otherwise i would have grabbed the tank for you. Sorry Ian

Mr Mazzy_j, I didn't get any messages here or in my email (even logged on to see) but if you have one of these you don't need I'm definitely interested. Seeing as the one on ebay is gone you can name your price too I'll try sending you a pm and see if that works Thanks btw......
