any idea on price ?
would I be wise to buy a low milage engine ready to swap ?

Gasket sets on ebay for around £70 i think, its not too bad a job to do if you give yourself a weekend and take your time.
Dunno what a garage would charge but it would likely be frightening 
p.s. whats your mechanic seeing to suggest the gaskets going??

I've had my matrix cleaned. he said there was a little oil in the water.
I doubt he is skamming me. he charged me 20 pound for an oil and filter change with fully synthetic oil. I would struggle to get the oil and filter for that money.

There is a chemical available (sorry name escapes me ) that when mixed with your coolant changes colour if there are gas emissions in the coolent.Just a thought

I've spent the whole weekend (7am to 2am yesterday) fitting curtain poles, light fittings, towel rails, blinds, pictures, mirrors etc in a new house (you know the drill) 
and much as i'd like to be out in the garage it would severely lower my life expectancy if i did so
