today I opened the car by using the key in the nearside door, and to my surprsie all; the windows went down and the sunroof opened. Is this a design action or an unknown fault.

Its called global opening/closing not all Scorpios had it though. If you hold they key in the lock or unlock position the windows and sunroof will open/close in sequence. A handy thing in hot weather or if you forget to close the windows/sunroof before you get out. did you hold the key in the unlock position? possibly the lock was sticking/frozen?
