The bottom pully is rubber mounted and I think that can fail which could be causing your problem.. ther were some posts a while ago about this very subject.... It is replaceable .....

Had a mechanic look at the wobbly drive belt, turned out to be the hydrolic belt tensioner was faulty ! new replacement £85 job done in two hours, thanks for the feed back lads it's well worth noting though as the crank pulley is much bigger and more expensive to replace. Steve

Hi, I've already replied to someone else on this same issue... I've got the same car, had the same problem - mine eventually failed (the bottom pulley AND the tensioner). Rather than pay £85 for the pulley and about the same for the tensioner, I fixed it for free. What I did was take the bottom pulley off, then weld the two bits of the pulley together using my mig. I had to align it on a piece of hardboard with a circular cut out for the bezeled part of the pulley. Make sure you get it in the centre too! For the tensioner - I got some 1/4 inch plate, made a rod out of it, drilled a hole in one end and two holes in the other (bottom) end - and used this to mount the tensioner wheel on rather than the spring loaded job. Just be carefull you don't over-tension... unless you wanna change the water pump / alternator soon too! I saved £160 doing this and would recommend it. Anyone reading this know where there's any diesels in a scrapyard btw? Simon

Steve - if the garage charged you for 2 hours work they've ripped you off mate. It's a 10 minute job to do the tensioner... The bottom pulley however - what a b****** of a job to get the pulley off! Rad had to come off when I did mine, needed pulley pullers and still wouldn't come of without resorting to dodgy means like levering against engine... oooer dodgy! When it eventually came off I felt like throwing a party mate I tell ya!

Changed the bottom pulley on mine in 30 mins. It's a taper fit so a sharp hit and the pulley came off. Didn't even remove the belt Bazza
