had problems a few weeks ago, and after different solutions were tried , eventually took car to Ford who diagnosed problem of gearbox speed sensor. anyway they did the work, 150 quid all in, and now seems all ok, much smoother change, and sudden rise from 15 to 18 mpg around town, whoo hoo.

good result. 
if any sensor is playing up, then the pmc tries to compensate for it, hence flashing o/d (gearbox issue) and poor running/consumption.
