Climate Control Reset

I have just read the climate control reset instructions off the site and instruction 3 says:-
"Select code 50 in the passenger side display - note that some 1995 Ultimas don't complete this step, which may indicate that they may have a fault somewhere".
This is exactly what happens on my 1995 Ultima, does any one know what the fault is and how to rectify it - setting the reset up then disconnecting the battery was sugested in the forum, but this did not work.
Any help would be appreciated.

i think it indicates a faulty HBC
