Ive got a 12v Ultima. Is there any way of forcing the auto box to stay in O/D? Sometimes, it's nice to let the torque do the work, not rev the hell out of it.

'fraid not,   all  the gear change decisions are made by the Engine Management system.  Anyway,  once in O/D    does the engine have any  torque , rice puddings are in no danger  where  my Scorp's   pulling power   is concerned Undecided

mmmm.......i could be wrong, but i think my overdrive is on permantly ? (98 2.3)
it certainly feels that way with near effortless gearchanges, and with my foot off the throttle @20mph upwards, speed is only VERY gradually reduced. when i push the od button, dashlight tells me od is off, then i can feel the autobox changes more, and slowing with foot off throttle is a lot quicker. Huh

i apprecciate this reply will not really help paulus, but why does mine seem to be on all the time? are the later scorps different in this way?

some of you may remember a post i started, about my gearbox probs, mainly niggling little ones, could they be conneced to eachother? and i dont feel the o/d cut in on motrways, as its already on!  Huh

hi there

the 'box also has torque convertor lock-up in 3rd and 4th (o/d) gears in E mode and only in 4th in S mode. i'm not sure if it locks up with o/d off, hence the greater reduction in speed, etc.  Undecided

you can monitor the gear chnages using the VE software.

Russ, VE stands for Vehicle Explorer. Its the software used to do the OBD stuff (On Board Diagnostics).

Paulus, I couldn't agree more.
Apparently, around the time the 1995 24v engine went into production, Ford claimed it had more torque than any normally aspirated 3.0 litre engine ever made, I think. I want to take advantage of that torque.. but you can't. The 12v must have the same balls at low revs. It's very annoying. We need someone to come up with a VE mod that lets US tell it what gear we want!

Actually.. some people have had manual conversions... how about a tiptronic conversion? Surely it'd just be an engine managment reprogram, a few extra wires and a new gear stick? Same gearbox presumably.

I thought the 12v Auto had a position '3' on it unlike the A4LDE with just position 2 and 1. I also thought the OD off button forced the box into third gear at motorway speeds. If so would manually selecting position 3 on the 12v box do just the same as an OD off button like on the A4LDE? if so just notch it into position 3.
