2,9 12V -95 Auto-box trouble

Huh

Hi!

Are experiencing serious problems with the auto box in a Scorpio 2,9 12V -95 (100.000 Km).

This problem occurred after had driven a few miles and turned of the main road to join a minor village. The car moved "heavily" like you have had the parking brake engaged and could hardly get the ½ mile to the destination. After have stopped the engine and started it again the engine run nice but as son as you tried to shift to D or R the car tried to jump away and the engine dropped dead due to over load (just as you had engaged a manual clutch to fast).

If letting the car stand for overnights and then start everything is OK for the first 20 - 30 seconds or so, shifting to D or R and the car begins to move smoothly BUT after this 20 -30 seconds the problem is back in full strength.

Can this be related to the Torque Clutch? As it in my eyes looks as the converter is looked up, i.e. you can't idle at D or R (N & P works fine) and no stall speed at all.

Have searched this excellent site but couldn't find anything like this and I do understand that there can be a lot of things that can cause this malfunction, and besides this car uses the hybrid A4LDe gearbox and can't use the OBDII diagnostic system (which don't make it easier).

Does someone experience this kind of malfunction or someone who may have a hint?
All information will be most appreciated.

Hi Saij,

Welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry I can't really help but I'm sure there's someone here who can.

I had auto-box problems with both my previous Scorps and had to get them reconditioned. This time I decided to run it permanently in sport mode to see if it made any difference (I bought it with 60k miles on the clock). It's now done 165k miles and still going fine.

Regards

It might be unrelated but a friend had this problem with an automatic box in his rover 416..  after 20 seconds, when you selected drive or reverse it would take up drive with a violent jolt, overpowering the brakes for a moment. Later on the same journey the autobox dropped all its oil.

You've probably done it already by now but i'd check the oil.. see if it has anything to say. See if the level is right, and also that it is healthy in colour. (Should it be a red-reddy brown?.. Brown means it's old but Ok, black means the gearbox itself is giving up.)

I have the same car and just replaced my gearbox (my problems were differt). There is a guy in Belgium who has a brand new box for sale for about € 500,00. I bought a second hand (tested) for € 125,00. Repairing the old box was about € 1200,00..... My repair man said these boxes are so bad you have to replace it every 100.000 km......

Thank you guys!

Do thanks for your interest and help!

Haven’t come any further (lack of time), but thinking of taking the car to a Ford-garage 20 miles away an see if they can obtain some more from their diagnostic system (have read the car with a “Star-reader”, says bad idle (true)).

Sounds bad if the gearbox will last just for 100.000 km…… Sad

Still believe there is something about the torque clutch (lockup) and of course my few km driving with this may well have damaged the gearbox. Maybe easiest to changed both converter and box. Have to check what the junkyards have to offer.

Aspenkoning: Did you make like in the manual – gearbox and motor out together or just the gearbox?

hi there

i need to question the 'lasts only 100,000 km'! my car has 120k MILES on it and works fine. as do others.

as in everything, there will ones which have problems, hence the site, but most are quite reliable.
