Whenever i use the auto function on the heater,9 out of 10 times the blower doesnt work.its fine if i manually turn the blower switch to a higher speed, although i notice the windscreen doesnt clear anywhere near as quickly as any other car i have owned. Is this common?

I guess he's referring to the heated front screen. Switch is together with the heated rear window switch on the right of the climate control/aircon panel. Its here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/handbook022.gif.
