External temperature readout

My Scorpio ( 1996 2.9 12v Ultima ) has recently started giving false external temperature readings, they are far too high.
The car was recently hit at the front ( elderly woman in a Skoda reversed into me ), could that have caused the problem ?

Yes the sensor is under the front cross member
