Oil Lamp on and Rattle

At the end of a short journey (1 mile) the oil light flashed on just before I parked. The next morning I checked the Oil and if anything it was high (Service Nov 2005). On starting the car the light oil lamp was on and there was a medium pitch rattle from the engine (only noticeable with the bonnet up. The car has 169K (FSH) and I am told it might be the oil pump but also it's probably not worth changing. I am told it has a chain drive and the chain may have gone, though I thought it was driven by a rod, must check my manual. Any comments appreciated.

If it's the DOHC then the oil pump is driven by a short chain from crankshaft. Not sure about the V6 but IIRC the 2.8 was driven from the camshaft via a skew gear which also drove the distributor - this doesn't apply to the Cossie though and possibly not the V6 12V either... Darren

Well don't know what engine but from the description I would guess a 24V. Gets it's oil pump drive from the front timming chains which could explain the noise & sometimes fails. But it's only a guess, what engine?
