hope someone can give me some good news here but i doubt it. i put my car into reverse today (2L saloon M reg Auto) and there was a loud CLUNK from the back followed by a clunking noise that increases in speed as you rev the engine.... the car does not move now forward or reverse all i have is the clunking .... its as if the prop shaft is just spinning or something has broken in the diff???? AA man just brought me back home, i had driven 70 miles before this happened , the noise sounds as if its comming from around the back diff ... the car has only done 80K from new could someone please tell me wether the diff is likely to go at this milage or could the bolts have sheered from the prop shaft OR could it be something else??? Will be able to look under the car this weekend but would like any ideas of the most likely cause many thanks in advance KEV

Sounds like either a prop/diff or driveshaft problem, you'll easily see once you have a look (carefully) I think you have answered it yourself, someone recently had the same thing where the driveshaft bolts hadn't been out back on properly.

Sorry I deleted my post. I didn't read your problem properly & have realised that it couldn't possibly be the donut if the noise is from the diff area

You'll see what the problem is more or less straight away if it's prop-shaft related! Testing the diff is also relatively straight-forward. Just jack up the rear of the car so both wheels are off the ground, release the handbrake and put it in gear (engine off!). Turn one rear wheel and the other should turn at the same speed in the opposite direction. Take the car out of gear and have an assistant hold one rear wheel still. Turn the other wheel and the prop-shaft should rotate. However it could be a failed CV joint on one of the rear driveshafts.... Darren

Interesting that your AA man ( or woman ) didn't even hazard a guess as to nature of the calamity, a two minute inspection would have surely given you an idea of the fault, ( did he even look under the car ?). I'm finding AA's roadside service pretty pathetic these days with more interest in getting you home than roadside fault finding or repair. These are my own opinions and not necessarily those of the board........ although you can agree if you want

The last time I used the AA was when I had a diesel Rover 418. I was driving along an urban road when the oil lamp suddenly came on (no other symptoms) so I knocked it out of gear and coasted to a stop with the engine off. Upon opening the bonnet there was oil everywhere, all over the top of the engine, radiator, the lot. AA came out and and we deduced that as it had made it all the way to the top of the engine but there were no obvious leaks there it must have been oil under pressure which would indicate the filter or turbo. Eventually the guy found a rubber hose which had blown off the connection to the oil cooler. He towed me home, I fitted two jubilee clips (though he advised me not to as it was a high pressure line) and it was fine ever after. IME, the AA have nearly always attempted to diagnose the fault before recovery; though some of their patrolmen have been less help than others! Darren
