No tail lights, instrument light, lights on chime

Hi all

A problem has just manifested this weekend and wondering if any of you guys have experienced this.

I noticed a couple of weeks back that whilst driving back late one evening, I had no instrument panel lights or backing light for clock. Once I got home I established there were actually no tail lights as well and warning chime for the lights wasn't working. I thought I would leave it until the morning so that I could pull some fuses etc and sort the problem.

The following morning, none of the fuses looked like they had snapped, so was perplexed. What confused me more -  I had to go out that day and whilst on route, I thought I would try the lights again. The instrument panel lights, tail lights - in fact, everything was back. I still couldn't understand how this happened and was sure that it would probably happen again.

Well it has this weekend. I have checked all fuses again and all of them OK.

Do you think it could be the light switch ? I would add that the parking lights (side & tail) on the "P" position work. With the ignition on, I turn the switch to sidelights, headlights and can flick the indicator switch for main beam - these all work. But I have no tail lights, instrument lights, chime and clock backing light.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

The switch is a good place to start as sometimes the 'pins' in the connecting plug overheat and cause a poor connection. THIS may help . The next thing to check is that the fuse box lids are properly secured and that the battery cover is fitted as water will cause havoc in these areas.

Thanks Simmo - this is extremely helpful. Whilst on route into work this morning, I was counting the screws/instruments that I was going to have to extract just to get to the light switch connector plug.

What a relief it is to find the attachment you have provided showing that it is possible to draw out the light switch without all the aggravation of dismantling the whole dashboard. I thought I was going to be into a whole evening's work.

I will start with the light switch.

The fuseboxes appear to be dry - the covers were fixed on properly and I do have the all important battery cover. I have checked all fuses and they apear to be OK. Also, I guess if it was a fuse, there would be little chance of the issue correcting itself after the first time I lost all the lights. However, your advice is good and I will deep dive into the fusebox once I have ruled out the switch and connector plug.

Thanks again for your help/advice - really appreciated.

same has happened to me before it is definatly the multiswitch on the rear of the lightswitch, as simmo said, in my case, one of the wires had shorted/burnt out, but you may just havea loose cnnection on one of the terminals, either way its a cheap and simple fix.

Just want to thank you guys who helped here. I took out the switch last night and noticed that the switch seemed to work again, however, there was a dodgy contact in the multiblock or between multiblock and switch contacts.

Every time I pulled on the cables/multiblock, the lights seemed to flicker a little. Anyway, I now know where the issue is and since the whole thing works, I have decided not to buy anything for it yet.

Put everything back together a bit more "tightly", placed switch back home and everything worked this morning.

Thanks again for your advice though.
