Rear Brake Disc/Pad Replacement
« on: Sep 23rd, 2006, 2:13pm »

I am replacing the rear discs and pads on a P reg. 2.3 Ultima but find that the new pad thickness of approximately 8mm will not provide sufficient space for the new disc. The piston is wound back so the inner pad does not interfere with the disc but the outer pad would need to have no more than 5mm thickness of pad meterial  to allow the disc into the caliper. With the piston fully in the inner pad does not influence the available gap. The critical dimension for the disc is determined by the jaw of the caliper, which is no-adjustable, and the outer pad. I checked pads from two different manufactureres and they both have approx 8mm of pad thickness?

I am puzzled as, even if they were available it would not seem sensible to replace worn pads with new pads with a thickness of only 4 or 5mm. The discs ordered over the web appear to be the right thickness.

I have done discs and pads before on this and other cars so feel a bit stupid. The only solution would appear to be a slightly thinner disc and/or pads but I would be surprised if the suppliers have not provided the correct replacments

Any ideas out there.

Many Thanks

Hi david is your caliper sliding on the two pins that hold it in as these sometimes seize up your caliper should move back so the front pad is tight to the disc which will increase the space for the back pad hope this helps malcolm

Malcolm,

Absolutely right. One pin is seized on each side. I have freed one side and fitted the pads satisfactorily but the other side will not move even with some assistance from a mallet and a large wrench. Must be careful not to shear it so will soak in Wd40 overnight and revisit tomorrow. Many thanks for the advice. It seems obvious  now but I did not spot it. and wasted lots of effort

Thanks for your time

hi,

on the rear cylinders, the notched part rotates (self adjustment system) you may need to wind it in by turning it clockwise, being careful not to damage the rubber oil gatier

All sorted. Issue was the corroded pins highlighted by Malcolm. I had to soak one overnight in WD40 and use a spanner with a 2 foot extension to release it gradually-definately a case of not too much torque or it would have sheared but it took an hour of coaxing to release it.

All brakes now in good order just need to revisit next weekend to fine tune the handbrake. I have read the procedure via the postings so am prepared for some equalising of the cable etc.

Then in for an MOT

Many thanks for all the advice
