Diagnostic plug?

Hi,

I made my own basic diagnostic unit for my earlier Granada and I understand that the 2.9 12v engine uses the same engine management unit, so basically all I need to source is a suitable plug to fit the diagnostic socket. Does anyone know of a source for this item please?

I've been trying to get a similar diagnostic rig for my own 1996 2.9 12v for ages, but nobody seems to be able to point me in the right direction on this.

Most of the other Scorpios use the OBD2 but the 12v won't use this system, even though it has the PC connection  in the coin tray which seems strange.

I'll be watching your post.

If you have not yet found it - the circuit is quite simple once you have the OBD2 plug. It is just a matter of connecting a switch and an LED to the pins of the plug.

Instead of an LED I used a 12v piezo sounder - it is easier to count the bleep codes than count the flashes of the LED to derive the codes. The only difference between this and the professional equipment is that you have to do the counting, where as the Ford unit displays the count as a number in the display. It is a little like very slow morse code and takes a few passes through the diagnostics to get the hang of catching the data then quickly writing it down on a scrap of paper.

I did actually think it ought to have been quite an easy job to interface the data to a PC and write a simple program to collect then display the data as a table.

Thanks for that Snoopy. Can you give me more advice as to just exactly what I need.
I'm a bit confused by what can be done, and how. No rush on it, but some more detailed info would be much appreciated by us 12v owners I'm sure.

Which is identical to the circuit I used for my MkIII Granada, except in place of (or as well as) the LED I added a piezo sounder.

All the parts needed are available for a few pence from Maplins. A standard LED can be used when in series with a 1k resistor. Orientation of the LED is important, get it the wrong way round and it blows.

To use a piezo sunder - it needs to be a small one rated at 12 -18v with a built in oscillator, rather than just a basic piezo element - or there will be no noise output. Again the correct orientation is important.

Curiously, if you leave the diagnostics unit plugged in with the switch off and drive the car, it will make a bleep every second. The length of the bleep is dependant on your throttle opening.

I've just ordered a plug combined with case, the OBDBLK, which http://www.skpang.co.uk/ advise is the correct one for the job.
