Hi all Just bought myself a diesel 1995 scorpio ultima, only done 80,000 miles, drives really well and didn't miss a beat on the 100 mile journey home. The following day on a short run i noticed the oil light come on very faintly , over the last 2 days its got brighter but still goes dull and off sometimes, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. ps, am i right in thinking it is the same engine as a transit, or is mine just noisey hence the oil light??

The light should realy be on or off. Dim sugests a fault other than lo oil preasure. Most motorfactors should be able to supply a new sensor cheeply. But also inspect the wiring for chaffing and shorts. TT

Dim would suggest as above, but to eliminate the pressure switch from being the cause you could unplug it from the pressure switch to see if it cures it - if it does, fit a new one.

for peace of mind check the oil level, for even more peace of mind change the oil and filter. does the oil light come on when parked on a incline? if so, could suggest low oil. also if the engine is adversly noisy, this can also point towards low oil. i dont know what engine the transit uses, but the scorp uses an italian made VM engine. the earliest ones used a cable accelerator, have no MAF and have a power of 115bhp. a year or so later the power was increased to 125bhp a MAF was also used and i think they used a fly by wire accelerator system. the good news is they are both very robust using gear driven cams so there are no cam chains or belts to worry about. i find with mine (the 115bhp version) that regular oil and filter changes make a noticeable difference, they do have that distinctive diesel rattle, but i find on motorway journeys this is very quiet and the whole car feels very smooth. as for mpg, expect mid 20's around town and up to 45 on a run. there is also a vacuum pipe from the top of the diesel pump to the underside of the turbo inlet, remove this and clean the gunk out of it making sure the holes in the banjo bolt are clear, refit it and notice the difference, a 15 minute easy job.

Oil levels fine but oil does seem very thin so job for tomoro eve is flush the engine and replace the oil and filter, i'll clean the vacuum pipe too. sounds like the pressure switch needs changing too.

might do, see what happens after you change the oil. also the diesel lump takes 6.6 litres of oil including filter change, and has 2 sump plugs of the allen key type, well, mine has anyway.
