When I go over a bump or rough surface I get a loud knock that seems to come from the nearside front somewhere.I took the car to a mechanic who jacked up the front end completely and he examined it and told me there was nothing wrong.Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Probably your anti-roll bar bushes. For some strange reason they drop out.....that's why mechanics can't find anything wrong.....no kidding!! Dead easy to fix, and not expensive. There's probably a picture of them on the site, but not sure where. Hope it helps you.
