Front Headlights

Hello all have a really annoying problem with my lights they decided to come on by themselves. no key in the ignition all doors locked and they came on and flatened the battery.
The rear lights do not iluminate just the front dip lights
The only other symptom was the alarm went off at 3.30 in the morning a couple of nights before.
renewed the light switch and the two relays but to no avail
would be very grateful for any ideas or diagrams anyone could provide

hmmmmmmm, a couple of topics similar to this lately, could it be something to do with the weather........do you have a battery cover?
a couple of months back after a really bad storm i had trouble with my alarm going off and the dash lights coming on without the ignition turned on. i have a battery cover and the fusebox that side was fine, but the fusebox on the otherside, well that had all manner of leaves etc between the bodywork and fusebox, i cleared this out and dried it all, might be coincidence but no more probs since....

Loads and loads of rain, fusebox, battery covers....sounds familiar.
You need to check both fuseboxes and the area round your battery , also the multi plugs that go into them. Lots of areas for damp, poor connections and corrosion which could give rise to your problems.
Give all the multiplugs a good clean up, and fit them very firmly together again with some light vaseline to keep moisture OUT.

Had a similar problem when I first had my estate, One of the luge on the drivers side fusebox was snapped and this was allowing water to get in, Headlights on, alarm sounding and all warning lights lit on dash.
It sounds like water getting into one of you're fusebox's to me.

Battery cover is allways on and i do keep around the battery and fuseboxes clear.
So it may be neccessary to strip the fuse box??
I have read the site strip down advice but one thing i'm not clear on and thats how to remove the fusebox? is it bolted in or clips? anyone help there please

Have you checked the actual lighting switch ?. One of the pins can overheat and cause problems. This is mentioned in the 'Fault finding'. Have a look at THIS.

Also try drying it out with a hair dryer if water is getting in first.

hi there everyone and thanks for the advice i'm pretty sure the fuse box is ok i dont get any other problems with electrics.
I have now recharged the battery (which is brand new) and the lights did not come on at first. until i tried the lights and the came on with the igntion out.
if i then go through a full sequenze with the lights and press the high beam stalk forward the lights go off
when i go through the sequence the right side does not work in main beam but it does when its suposed to be off.
I have cleaned the blocks and contacts change the light switch itself but now i'm not sure where to go from here
so if anyone has any new ideas i would be grateful

Just quickly looked at the fuse situation and fuse 10 is main beam nearside and 11 is offside. Similarly fuses 4 and 5 deal with the dipped beam so it does suggest a fusebox issue. Try pulling all the listed fuses, check or replace with new and inspect the contacts as best you can when replacing. Could you have an 'issue' with the control on the steering wheel if that affects the workings. Remove the shroud and check the wiring. Has any work been done here recently?.

I had been thinking it could be a stalk issue took the wiring out and cleaned it, Not sure if it could be the stalk itself though.
If i turn the ignition on the car starts and the main beams come on
If i turn the lights on with the control knob they go through the dipped and high beam sequence but when i turn it to the off position the stay on main beam and then if i try it through the switch again the left high beam stays on but the right goes off on the dipped choice and comes on full beam.
To turn the lights off i have to switch it to off and push the stalk forward and all lights go off.
The one thing i have noticed is that when the lights are on when they should not be the back lights are not iluminating
I have not had any work done on it lately everything was fine untill a week ago

This really does sound like a problem with the connections to the main lighting switch. Have you checked out the actual multiplug for signs of overheating?. The no rear lights is a sign that a connector is either corroded or not fitted correctly. The other issue is the correct fitting of the connection to the fuse box. The lugs of the connector MUST be properly located or the unit will not fit as it should do. Read reply 6 HERE

The Granada had as Ford modification a plastic cover retro fitted on top of the off side fuse box - the same fuse box as the Scorp. I'm wondering if it might be worth getting hold of one or even making one.
