i am having a problem with my scorpio it's a 2.9 12 valve it's having trouble with reverse mostly when it's cold and it really rams it in 3rd and 4th again this is worse when it's cold i am pretty sure that the maf sensor needs cleaning but the instructions on cleaning the maf sensor is for all the other engine types 16v and 24v and so on if anyone could point me in the right direction i would be very grateful.

ps. this site is absolutely fantastic

The 12V hasn't got a maf.
Someone will be along with some ideas though. Smiley

i am having problems with the running of the car as well. the revs are fluctuating which you hardly notice when you drive the car but it's probably the same problem. I thought that all i needed to do was clean the maf sensor but it seems there isn't one. I am starting to get a bit worried now because i can't afford to spend much money it would be a shame to sell this car coz i like it so much

When I said for someone to have a look I meant a member, I don't think anyone would charge for helping a fellow member out, You are too far from me i'm affraid.
You could try cleaning the ICV for the bad idle, as for the bad gear changes it could be the soleniods in the box, what state is the gear oil in and how many miles has the car done.

that's a shame you're too far away i really appreciate your offer though. I think i am going to change the gearbox oil and filter and see what happens then coz i don't think that will cost me very much

Hi Madalaine,

from memory on the 12v it is near the front of the engine, attached to the inlet (large silver gubbins to you and me). The idle valve is a silver cylinder held on by 2 10mm bolts and has 1 electrical connection on the end.

Remove the plug and the 2 bolts, take care of the gasket unless it is in poor condition then you will need a new one. Spray carb cleaner into the valve until it is clean inside. Refit, but do not ovetighten as the bolts are going into alloy.

Hope this helps  Smiley

PS This auction has a good picture that shows you what the valve looks like:

ICV = Idle Control Valve, Two 8mm headed bolts to remove it, not sure where it is on the 12V.
You take it off and squirt some carb or brake cleaner in it, wait for a few minutes and shake out whats left in there then let it dry out, give it a squirt of WD40 and then put it back on the car.
Here is a link that may help out,
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pooridle.htm
The ICV on all the engines looks very similar, Another problem you may have is an air leak Undecided

Another point, have you checked the gearbox oil in the right way?

You need to go for a drive of a few miles. Then park up but leave the engine running. Run the selector through all gears 3 times, pausing in each gear (i.e. P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1) long enough for it to enagage. Then return to Park and check the gearbox oil via the dipstick, still with the engine running. It needs to be on max and a pinky red colour.

I had an ICV fail on my previous but one Granada. Syptoms of the failure was dieing when trying to idle when weather particularly cold. It gradually got worse to the point where it would not idel cold, even in warm weather. It was very sticky in its movement and I found it internally choked up in carbon. I wrecked its internal valve using the wrong cleaner.

On this engine (2.9 12v), it is the nearest part of the engine to you, looking over the top of the radiator.  It is held on by two bolts and has a two pin electrical plug.

The KOER diagnostics for the 2.9 12v would report a problem with the ICV long before you would notice a problem. For this engine the diagnotics unit is a cheap and easy DIY project.

I never knew the 12v didn't have a MAF either.  One less thing to go wrong.

As far as a gearbox oil and filter change goes, be wary of using a Ford main dealer.  The crooks fleeced me for  £200 and did not even change the filter.

Does it not engage when cold?  Mine did and it just needed a top up.
