My 2.3 scorpio ultima estate is now waiting for our trusty mechanic to have a look - but it looks bad...??
Driving along the A303 at between 70 and 90 for a hour and I smelt what I now know was steam / old water - I did not recognise the smell at first and thought it was coming from outside... about 10 mins later we were still flying along - no temp problem that I noticed or red lights etc and then there was steam pouring out of the bonnet.... thinking we were on fire we turned up the kerb immediately and ran for it.. Car was running fine at the point when I stopped.... I switched off engine and several lorry drivers appeared with fire extinguishers (traffic was at a stand still) anyway cut a long story short when we opened the bonnet it was not smoke but it was a cracked inlet manifold or something like that the RAC chap said  - it looked serious to me as it looked like a metal part of the engine sort of like a tube??
 Huh Huh Huh

no its certainly not the end, unfortunately the 2.3 was prone to this, the inlet manifold is only made of plastic, albeit a strong plastic, but not strong enough,a lot of the 2.3 owners on here have had/still having this problem,if not to bad, they can be repaired (sorpioman has done this),or buy a new one, they are still availiable from ford, you can try asking for a secondhand one on here, but they are quite a popular request, and usually with this item,it may pay to invest in a brand new one....(esprcially if you have plans to keep the car)

just to add a bit of bad news, the 2.3 is also prone to cracking it's head bewteen cylinders 2 and 3 on the inlet side when they over heat/inlet manifolds crack, keep a very close eye on your water and oil and make sure no nasty gunge starts appreaing...

OK thanks for the advice etc.  Glad it is fixable although the missus wont be - she is still wanting a smaller girly car but we only need one!
