Petrol tank flap

Hi everybody.
Well here goes; my petrol tank flap does not want to push closed properley so when the lock is applied the locking bar does not allways engage with the flap. The worry is that not only does this make the contents of the tank vulnerable but if the bar catches the "eye" full on it could cause damage etc. I have greased the "eye" and the bar to help prevent this. I don't know wheather way to squeeze or prise open the shiny silver locking spring in order to fix my problem.
All suggestions gratefully recieved

New spring needed. No other way. You'll probably get one at your local breakers.

Thanks for your promp reply Spannerman. I have no idea as to how to get the old spring out. Have you done this job yourself? I am thinking along the lines of magnets to hold the flap in position - tried 2 little round ones, which I got from a material shop, and "No Nails" but the 2 magnets are just too thick preventing the flap from closing enough for the lock to work. If I could find thin magnetic strips that may do the job till I can obtain a spring

Is the recessed part seated correctly?
They are a push and turn bayonet type fit and can move so that the flap sits slightly proud of the wing instead of flush with the bodywork.
I have a couple of spare ones, what colour is your car?

Have the same problem with my flap as well. Highlander could you take a pic of what you mean by bayonet fit on one that's removed from car so I can grasp what you're on about?

The whole flap just pulls out of the plastic housing. You can then get at the spring.
There is a risk of breaking the locating lugs, so take it out very carefully. It's a fiddly job, but quite easy.
There are two bolts under the actual filler cap (ie the nozzle cover). Don't unbolt these, as they hold the filler pipe to the tank.
Quite easy to sort out without using magnets etc. Good luck.

This is interesting, all your replies are going via my email. You can see the four lugs on the back of the filler cap, they twist lock onto the wing to keep it in place(like a bulb) if one breaks or comes slack the whole thing will pull out from the body a little which would change the angle of the locking bar possibly enough so it wouldn't locate properly
I couldn't see how to remove the flap itself and wasnt brave enough to force it 
The "spring" seems easy enough to get at and can be bent so possibly you can bend it to hold the flap tighter?

This is Gooood! I would have made a mess of the job (but I have not done it yet) but now I know what is involved I can get on with it, when the weather is a bit better - too blowie for me at the moment. Great pictures and information, thank you Highlander  .
