Diff oil seal

I recently entrusted a local garage to replace the diff oil seal as it was liberally spraying oil about the place.

Cost £90 parts & labour & got it back the same day.

A couple of days later I noticed that at about 60 mph there was a slight rumble/vibration which seemed to get worse the faster you went.

I'd never noticed it before & my first thought was that because the propshaft had been taken off, then it must have been put back on in a different position, or that the bolts weren't put back on in the same holes that they came out of.

I took it back to the garage & did mention the fact that the prop was precision balanced with different length bolts (as far as I know). The owner said that the mechanic that did the job was off today, but as far as he knows it all went back on the way it came off.
He also said that he'd never heard of different length bolts on a propshaft to diff  Huh

They put it up on the ramps to have a look & guess what?....it was still leaking oil, & not just a little bit, but as much as it was before  Roll Eyes....my first thought was they've taken the prop off but couldn't get the seal out, so have stuck some of that Wynns stuff in it & hoped for the best  Roll Eyes
The guy says that the seal was definately replaced so it could be leaking from the where the splined sleeve on the prop fits in... Huh...is this possible ?

They cleaned it up & said to come back in a few days to see if they could see where it was leaking from.

I've looked underneath today & there is oil everywhere & you can smell it burning on the exhaust, so I'm taking it back Thursday (7 Dec).

Any facts & advice to arm myself with, will be much appreciated..... Smiley

Garage job warning bells are ringing again!  Undecided

I've worked on a few Scorpio diffs and the four bolts connecting the prop all seem to be the same length.

The Drive flange on the diff needs to be removed with pullers to gain access to the seal and I would reckon its not possible or at the least very difficult to do with the diff still on the car, did they take it off the car or did they hammer the flange off and bend the drive pinion shaft causing your vibration??

Oh and the prop to diff connection is bolted circular flanges, there is no spline fitting so ask the guy that did it about that Wink

This shows the procedure, about quarter the way down the page

For £90 inc parts they didnt spend much time on it so I wonder..

Cheers Stuart

The diff was not taken off the car & come to think of it, the edge of the housing did have a couple of marks that looked as though it had been hammered out  Roll Eyes

If it turns out that they have bent the drive pinion shaft (will have to get a second opinion), then I think the CAB & office of fair trading will be getting a call  Smiley

I'll keep the offer of the diff in mind, cheers mate  Smiley

Took the car back today & there was plenty of oil running down the diff & the garage owner confirmed that it was leaking from the new seal.

He's gonna order a new seal & replace it personally FOC, as it's still under guarantee....what a nice guy Smiley

As for the vibration/rumble.....He'll fit the new seal first & make sure the prop is balanced properly......& then go from there Smiley....
....can't say fairer than that  Wink
