Haven't owned this car through a winter yet so not sure what to expect from the engine when properly cold. When starting at the moment it sounds almost like a diesel (Bonnet up) loud tappety noises that you get from a cold diesel engine also exhaust has quite a strong smell of petrol . Is this normal on a cold (Winter) Cossie? The noise calms down to its normal smoothish/fairly quiet sound when warm. It was never what i'd call a quiet engine even in the summer so just wonder if this is normal. Also the aux belt is quite noisy/whiney, I know on some cars that's the norm is it the same on the cossie? Guy.

Hi mine is a bit tappety when cold, too. the tappets are hydraulically pressurised with the engine oil so if thats cold and sluggish it takes a few seconds to build up pressure. if its tappy in summer on startup perhaps you need to drain the old oil, run it with a flushing oil and top up with new oil. hope this helps. cheers Roy edit dont know why the petrol smell tho.

may be that the chain tesioners are a bit worn, mine rattles more now its cold then it did when it was warm, i can only put this down to the oil being a bit thicker now it's colder and taking longer to fill the tensioners, i used t have a petrol smell, had a look round and found a plug was very loose (was almost half way out ) tightened it up and it's stopped for me. a few cossie owners will tell you, the engine seems to run just as good on 5 cylinders as it does on 6 lol

I had the petrol smell accompanied by a loud rattle at one point. Garage told me it was a blown out cat, changed it and both fautls went away. Cheers Penguin
