Radio stalk controls

1998 Ultima 2.3L auto estate After over 8 years the battery gave out on me. Got a new battery fitted and of course the radio needed it's code to work. Entered the code and the actual radio buttons work, changing bands, playing CD's etc., but the stalk buttons don't function. They did before the battery was changed, so what's the problem??

Ok that's a bit like "is it plugged in" and your answer is something I didn't even consider. So that's the first job. Thanks

I think the cable from the stalk runs straight to the radio, so i'm not sure if there is a specific fuse for it. It hasnt been moved at all? in case it isnt plugged in?

Consider:- The electrical diagram shows one fuse, so if this is blown, would the radio work? Apart from the dealer changing the battery, nothing has been touched. The Audio Guide shows only how to put the code in to re-activate the radio. I am still puzzled. Regards

Possibly need a new stalk? I have a spare one if you want to try it. have a look at the connections at the stalk and the radio

hi there where did you get the code from? was it the dealer? if so, (and even if they didn't give you it) they might have removed the radio and disturbed the multi plugs. that's where i'd start first. removal 'keys' are available from halfords. cost about £5. hth

Nine years ago I purchased my Ultima from Ford with 12 months warranty but the stalk was intermittent and it was replaced under warranty, however within a few days the stalk again failed. The model 7000 radio was then replaced but after a few days the stalk again stopped working. I removed the radio and discovered that by applying slight pressure on the side of the plug that the stalk worked. Using a rubber band to pull the plug slightly sideways within the socket cured the problem. The same rubber band has now been in service for nine years. 73's Malcolm

Gentlemen I think you have all come up with he answer. When Ford serviced my car, I asked them to advise me of the radio code. They didn't enter the code but just gave me the number on paper. It seems they had to remove the radio to get it's serial number. Hence, some possible error in replacing the radio. Thanks to one and all
