Rear drive shaft

Hi, I have today heard a knocking sound from the rear offside wheel. Will check the wheel itself and bearing but i think its the driveshaft breaking up. Noise is much worse when i reverse. Has anybody had any experience of this and what sort of job is involved. Should I still drive the car or get on with it quick as it may fail altogether. I think I will need to change the drive shaft as a whole unit. Best wishes Richa

The cv joint can be replaced seperately. Better to have a look before buying anything though

Thank you Highlander for the reply. I had a look at the car and sure enough the outer gaiter has perished so I will get on with changing the CV joint as a whole. Strangely the chinking sound has disappeared but probably not for long. Without doubt if a gaiter looks in poor condition it needs changing straight away. Does anybody know if you should change the driveshaft bolts or just replace the old ones. Regards Richa
