My 2.9 12v Scorpio is back in the garage - again.  The general opinion here is that there is water somewhere in the electrics although this may not be the real problem.

The garage has discounted water in the fuse boxes.  I can only assume that they are right - and this was the first place they looked. They now admit to having no idea what the problem is and I have been asked if you experts can give them a clue.

There are a number of issues - see my other thread -but let’s deal with them one at a time.

They cannot understand why, when the engine is switched off and the key taken out of the ignition, the mode and odometer screens, the door/boot open icon and the battery light all come back on.

How is this happening?

At the risk of stating the obvious, surely, power must be being applied, wrongly, to the circuit. The most likely cause is a wiring fault or water in the fuse box. Have the garage actually removed the fusebox?. The auxillary fusebox is made up of several layers each of which has 'tracks' in it to contain and separate the copper segments. Water anywhere in these layers will obviously cause power to 'track' from one circuit to another.

This shows the tracks and segments.

Are you sure that the main fusebox has had the connector correctly re-fitted. IT MUST locate in the two lugs BEFORE it is pressed down.  As has been said "If you do it first time it 'aint right !".

Another possible cause is the cigar lighter socket which can short out. Pull fuse 43 in the Aux Box and see if that has any effect.

ALSO check the ashtray is NOT shorting out on the cigar/cigarette lighter .
It can happen and that can cause ALL the dash lights etc to be live even though the ignition is OFF>

Check the easy ones first and then go for the hard/difficult ones.

i had exactly the same happen to me before xmas, and it WAS water in the fusebox(s), i just left a hairdryer on them for 20 mins to dry them (lids off), then cleaned everywhere and made sure all drainage holes were unblocked, put lids back on etc and sprayed everywhere with copious amounts of wd40.....

I wonder if the instrument cluster itself is faulty?

Have you had the battery out and a good poke around the battery tray area? Is it all clean and dry down there? There is a multiplug around there somewhere that may have got wet if the drain holes are blocked or were blocked at some point.

Also have a good look at all the earth points he can find.
