Hi all, if you remember my post called DOUBLE TROUBLE i had problems with the car accelorating and the temp.  Well the temp and heating now works great, i flushed out the system and fitted a new thermostat, ta da, supurb.  Now the biggie.  Iv cleaned out the throttle idle valve, fitted a new throttle position sencer. Dissconnected the battery and did the 5 mile drive bit, the ran like hell for about 5 miles, then, my god it shifted. Then said goodnight.  In the morning it started but again was idling bad, it seems to idle great for aprox 4 secs then theres a sudden differance, then runs nice again, i took it out and found than it has a very slow acceleration for the lower speeds, the engine gets louder, the revs slowly go up but great acceloration.  Looking at the plugs they look ok but i know this means nothing, the HT leads look a white and fadded colour. When the car is in any gear R,N,P it idles fine but when in D and waiting to go it idles poor and seems to struggle to keep 500 RPM,  Any help would be great

As far as plugs and leads go, you need to check them with a proper plug and lead tester, or replace them. I would personally think that if the car has been running OK, then that's unlikely to be your problem, otherwise you'd have had constant bad running all the time.

Did you take a look at your ECU connector?

Go under the glove compartment, and you'll see it sitting there in a clip on tray. Big silver box about 6" square. Undo the clip, drop it down, and then remove the big plug that goes into it. You'll need a 10mm spanner or socket to undo it.

Any moisture or water in the pin area could well be causing you problems like you mention, because it will short out the pins, and the engine will run like an old pig. The pins MUST be 100% dry. It's also possible that the ECU itself is defective, or going defective, in which case you need to either have it repaired, or pick up another one from a breakers.

You MUST get the right type, ie exactly the same numbers as the original, and once you've fitted it, then you need to do the battery disconnection thing again.

Mine is a 90GB-12A650-HB if that helps, as I have the 12v 2.9 like you.  But you need to check your own for the numbers to make sure.  Wink.

Another member may have one for sale, but beware of some of the Motor accessory shops that sell them at stupid rip-off prices. Hopefully someone will have one for you.  Cheesy

Hi all, ok well i took the ECU out and apart from a bit dusty it was in good condition, the connections still had the creamy stuff that fords out in during putting it together, put in new spark plugs and its running a bit better, just waiting for the HT leads and new coil.  Iv checked all the fuse boxes and given them a clean but still not running perfect, strange thing is, i took the beast through a car wash this morning and after the car run like it wasnt firing on all cylinders, lacked power and acceloration was really bad, i used this as a good time to start to see if water was getting in anywhere but everything was dry, after a few hours it ran the way it was again, any ideas or is it perhaps time to look for another car

Hi

might it be a blocked cat? with mine, it felt like it lost power, and made everything much noisier. seemed a bit better when warmed up (maybe cat expanded and started breathing a bit?) give them a shake and see if anything rattles. mine got a lot better on a rolling road, big lump came out and power was restored.

cheers

Hi there, after disconnecting the battery it is stated that the car will learn again in a few miles. My 2.3 learns in about 15 miles. So jut have a bit more patience with it  Wink Also the idle problem is the same, it barely struggles to keep running. But after a "full day of work" it will come back again and idle smooth as silk.

Hi mate, not had a chance to look at the cat yet, but this is the latest on the car.  It has a water leak that i have located but cant fix till sat.  Iv been working in chelmsford which is just over 30 miles away, first thing in the morning when its cold the car runs ok but still not smooth when changing gear (auto).  On the way home around 5 when the weather is warmer the car runs ok, i have about a 5 mile run on an A road then the car plays up.  I pull up at a round about, the car idles ok but as i go to accelorate its as if its not firing and takes a few seconds to clear, it also seems that to make the car really shift im having to push the throttle harder and harder, sometimes it just wants to go but doesnt.  Iv put new plugs in, checked and cleaned loads of connections and had the ECU out but all seemed fine, most was actually in good condition.  really puzzled.  Just ordered new ht leads as the old ones were white and faded, and a new filter and oil for the auto box.
running out of ideas

The car wash part sounds as if damp may well be the problem, on HT lead + coil + distributer cover.

Try looking under the bonnet on a dark night, when it is damp and the engine not running as it should. You may well see the sparks leaking out, or tracking.
