ABS + TCS light comes on and stays - Cosworth v24

Hi all, Took the car out for an errand after 5 days in its garage. On start no strange indications (I always watch!); after some starting and stopping I noticed the ABS and the TCS light being on. After restarting they did not extinguish. Everything else is normal, in particular braking; no smells, no noises etc. Lacking time I did not test the ABS nor TCS function on a slippery verge yet; of course I will. ABS and TCS always behaved absolutely silent and dependable upto now, so I am lacking experience here. (The predecessor Scorpio model's ABS used to noisily test itself c. 20 seconds after starting: purring and vibrating; not this one) Any standard clues you can give me in advance? Is there a diagnostic/checklist for this? Thanks, Ray

rear wheel sensors are the most likely cause for the t/c light staying on

As above, if the lights come on and stay on above about 11mph then have a look at the rear wheel sensors as a fault with those will put both lights on, they do get dirty too which causes a problem. Uneven tyre pressures, a failing wheel bearing or a loose hub nut can cause also the light to come on. If, as is the way I understand you, the lights come on with the ignition and stay on then it sounds like the ABS system is not passing its self test. Could be a sensor issue, or something to do with the pump/modulator. Have a look at: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/absmodulator.htm http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/abssystem.htm Though with the traction control light being on the most likely cause of the problem is the rear sensors, either dirty, or bust!

Thanks guys for all your input. I went about testing using a printout of the excellent http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/abssystem.htm pages. Inspected and replaced the relevant fuses one by one, time and again checking whether the ABS+TCS light would extinguish. Checked the multiplug connectors, though hard to reach, again checking the lights after each step. Both stayed on. I then decided to test whether ABS and TCS were functional at all, regardless of the lights. When starting the car again, the lights came on; the moment I drove the car out of my garage, the lights extinguished..! Testdrives and testbrakes, alternating left- and rightwheels on a muddy verge, were excellent: both ABS and TCS performed as they should. The actuators can be heard doing hard work, the car drives straight on, TCS light blinks happily and dies after each succesful TCS action, pulling the car out of the verge on full throttle, as it should. The lights have sofar never come on again. So, all systems normal. It hurts though -- not having been able to pinpoint the cause.

Maybe you re-seated a loose plug or something then, when the car started moving, all the system tests had been passed so the lights went out Good work anyway
