Low on Power

2.9 12v Auto

Just seems to lack Power when accelerating

auto box seems to work ok - not slipping

cruises effortless at motorway speeds

just doesn't accelerate that quickly from any speed (even after kickdown)

it has just passed a MOT & all the Emissions were fine

I also have a old mk3 Granada 2.9 Manual

which pulls away a LOT better even in top gear you can feel it accelerate

Any Ideas ?

Does it just need a good service ? bits replacing ? bits cleaning ?

Thanks Martin

hi there

could be a fuel pressure issue; we're seeing more of that now. have you checked all the usual things? spark plugs, correct grade of oil, etc.

don't really know much about the 12v. Undecided

Hi  mate, im having exactly the same problem myself, although i also have a slight idling problem when the car is stationary but waiting to go in drive, chech your vacum pipes and EGR valve, seems to be one of the biggest suggestions on here for the problem.  I replaced the plugs, HT leads, coil and it made no differance at all.  Good luck and let me know how you get on

mine doesn't have a disttributor cap

I wonder if this is your problem with the car?

ALL the 12v have a Distributor Cap. 6 Leads and a Coil Lead. The coil is down on the right hand side of the engine bay looking into the bonnet from the front of the car.

I wonder if your car has been modified and your ignition system is non standard.

Only a thought.

Also, it's not a good idea to remove the canister that surrounds the dizzy cap. Apart from protecting the cap, it also provides shielding from moisture and water a bit like the battery cover.

As for acceleration, the 12v isn't a Cosworth, but even so, it will out accelerate most cars without any effort from standstill. If it doesn't, then yes, you have some tuning issues.  Wink

If its that down on power check to see if the cat has broken up and is blocking the exhaust. THAT could cause all of the syptoms that you describe, even though the car runs OK.

How do I tell

Would it still have good emissions if the Cat is US ?
(passed it's test easily)

if it is the Cat do I have to replace it
can I just clean it out - so it's straight through
or just do away with it altogether

I know on my Bike it's so much better without it

Thanks
