White Smoke!

Hiya Dude's,
I'm a new guy on the block.
I've been working on my new ford scorpio 96' DOHC 16v
since way before christmas.
The head gasket blew, so i dived in and saved it from the scrapyard. I could have it for nothing if i fixed it. I know next to nothing about engines but with the help of this website (and a mate) WE DID IT! Cool
I even somehow filled the batteryside fuse box with water Huh That again i fixed with major help from THIS site. Kiss
I haven't taken it for the 5mile drive(no tax)yet.
But i did drive it up to the main road and back... NoNo
and there it was 'white smoke' coming out of the exhaust. I'm praying it's water in the exhaust box from the head gasket blowing before, if so i shall drill a small hole in the exhaust box and be ready with a small screw. But what do you guys think, has the gasket gone again?  Undecided  M.O.T. is due this Monday!  Shocked

   Ern...

P.s. The smoke smells bad, like plastic. Coolant maybe?

may not be a problem mine smokes for about ten minutes till the engine warms up then stops. check the expansion tank to  see if there is any oil mixed with it, allso take out the dip stick to see if there is any contamination. leave it ticking over for awhile [stay with the car dont wonder off for a cup of tea] in case it overheats
the trouble with head gaskets blowing is the head can overheat and warp it. only cure for that is to have it skimmed or new head. good luck.

i would say water and oil in the exhaust,(cat) you need to run it a bit more to find out more, did you have the head skimmed? did you fit new strech bolts on the head, ?i hope it is wat i said ,and good look but it sounds the same as mine once i re did my car with the white smoke,,tho,,, Wink

Find a steep hill, face it upwards and runn the engine for a good while at high revs, it will clear out any water...

Just a suggestion,,, Roll Eyes

i had this once on my cossie, just after a spark plug change. smoke smelt strange, almost dieselly, after about 1000 miles, one of the sparks had blown its head. replaced that spark plug, instant cure. worth checking....

accordingt  to my records, the plugs were last changed on 18/06/05 at 47,583mls.car is currently at 52,861 so should be ok.although i also note they were also changed at 43, 454 on the previous service.4,000 miles? either the garage was a bit over cautious or rip off merchants. so i think i will change them any way.

the garage diagnosed by pulling the plug leads off one by one, with the engine running (and rubber-handled pliers i assume), one of the leads made no difference when pulled.

Hello again guys!
I've been over to the car today and given it a good run, parked it on a hill and ran it at high revs. The smoke is not as bad as it was.
Didn't drill a hole in the exhaust box. Now all i can do is wait for the mot, results on monday.
Once again thanks a lot for your help.
old Ern.
ps. i'll let you know if it passes. Wink

the only slight concern i'd have is you checked the head visually, it really should've been checked with a gauge for warpage, i dont know what the tolerance limit is, but its normally quite small.
