Unusual ABS problem

Is it really the case that no-one can help me with the ABS problem I reported about a week ago. Or is it that no-one really cares One more cry for help. Car is a 2L 16V. ABS system functions normally except in one annoying respect - As I brake, normally, the ABS system operates (i.e.typical on off on off braking)during the last fraction of a second before the car comes to a halt. I disconnected the system electrically and the car comes to a halt smoothly; thus demonstrating that its not a disc or a pads problem. I've replaced the regulator which sits under the ABS pump unit, but the problem remains. Where should I look next do you think? The wheel modules?. (They seem to test out electically and they are almost certainly rusted in!) Or may be the pump unit? Is bleeding the brakes going to be a big job?. Anyone any ideas before I get myself into a bigger mess. My other two Scorpios, both Cossie estates, are great mates. Pity about the little-un! Is there anyone there? John

My Cossie does this too, so would also be interested to here any ideas on why. Interestingly, it started after i changed the NS rear wheel hub and bearing, after the hub splines broke up. Car is a 95 Cossie with Teves MK7 ABS pump/modulator. Ian

Hi, My flatmate has a citroen saxo (yes i know....) which does the same thing. A buzz and a ppttannggg as it stops. It started after he had the driveshafts and bearing done. and seems worse if he is turning. The garage tested the system and all seemed well, they couldnt fix it. My theory (and one which has been on this forum and others before) is that the sensor "head" has worn down due to duff bearings etc, and when they are fixed, the "head" is now too far away to get readings. I reckon the side that is making the noise is the good side, its the other side registering zero, causing the good side to have its brakes applied, as the car thinks its in a slide. I told him to try replacing the sensor (even though it passes the tests), but he seems ok with "living with it". Hope this helps,

I have a spare pair of rear sensors, so will have a go at changing the offending one on the weekend. Ian

Dirty sensor rings or too big an air gap between sensor & ring can cause this. Clean the sensor rings, there’s a plastic cap on the inside of the front hubs that you can prise out to inspect them. Chances are the front sensors will be rusted in so only try and take them out as a last resort. The face of the rear sensor should be flat, if it’s indented then it has rubbed on the sensor ring at some time probably a failing wheel bearing. Compare the 2 rear sensors, if one is noticeably shorter you could consider following this thread: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=di splay;num=1155408212;start=0#0 Dave

Thanks Dave. I've never noticed the plastic cap. I'll try this for starters. As you have pointed out, and as I have learned from experience, the sensor modules are likely to be rusted in. So, Ian, be prepared for hassle when/if you decide to remove the modules on your car. I had to drill them out of one or my Cossies. There seems to be the general view that its a wheel sensor problem and not a pump problem. So (fingers crossed) that's good news. John

Sometimes the sensor rings ( which are magnetic ) can pick up some small steel objects, even rust from the discs. Well worth checking ALL the sensor rings for build up of dirt etc, as that can cause the problem you describe. I clean and check mine every 6months or so.
