niosy head 2-3 98 scorpio, help!

I have been having problems with a serious rattle (got worse in a month! which i was hoping may be the cat! it's not the cat, i have taken the rocker box lid off as the noise was horrendous,( under load mainly) and beside each valve under each camshaft lobe is a hatched hollow area, which appears to be an oil well or hollow to lubricate the cam lobes and the followers that are on top of the valves! some of mine are empty! only two have a good amount of oil in, should they all be full up? the engine does run hot and a bit lumpy, sounds like a diesel! could this be a blockage in an oil way to the or through the head?or oil pump? how can i check this,? any advice please,
Thanks guys, Bob

Hi
I have the same problem,i went to see my local garage who know that i do the work myself,so they know that they wont get the job, anyway they said it was either my big end or something around that area.
In other words its had it.
This the work i did before seeing the garage.
I changed the cams and added oil rails on mine as mine had no oil rails fitted for some reason(last owner)
oil change
The oil went where its supposed to then, but still made the noise on tickover and not when reved at a steady pace, made more banging rattling noise under load,eg-putting into gear. Sad

hi there

no and yes! Grin the cat is just below the manifold, so can be 'heard' quite easily. the whole cat/front pipe is nearly 4 feet long.

my cossie developed a rattle, at low revs, was low down in the engine, the garage diagnosed big ends (used a stethoscope). i had also lost quite a bit of power. they condemned the engine.

i changed the cats and the noise disappeared, and power was restored. cat was blocked on n/s. if you know the cats are gone, it might be that, its worth swapping....

hope this helps,

Thanks Tintin, i had exactly the same problem with my 94 cossie, same pre cat n/s played up, so i took it out and the other out at the same time, similar to what i 'm have ing now, im just going out with an oven glove to hold on to the housing and rev it at the same time, i hope it is the cat, i will bash it out if it is,
Cheers Bob

Thanks Scorpio man Tintin, i have tested cat by holding the case, the noise is above the cat, Sad not sure where now, almost sounds like a piston hitting the head!very metalic noise, plugs look fine, with one hell of a spark from the coils, well over1/2 inch jump! Shocked but it is a nightmare to start havinmg to floor the pedal many times to get it to catch, untill it eventually gets warm enough to tickover on it's own, any more ideas please guys i'm running out now  Embarassed
cheers Bob

yep my noise was not coming from the cats, it was coming from the engine, and was a very loud metallic tapping noise.
