A few problems

Problems started yesterday... The car wouldnt start, turning the key and the normal dashboard info displayed radio comes on then i tried to start it .... nothing. when i released the key all the dials on the dashboard started flicking round and back again, so i took the key out and tried again ... exact same thing happens but it has reset all the milage and computer displays (not the radio or seat functions) Tried to start again and it did the same thing, serveral times, almost like the battery was flat, sureley it cant be though ... as everything else worked fine. Then it started and ran like a bag of crap (i put this down to it reseting itself ...) smoke from the exhaust is like a bad diesel firing up. Looking at the dashboard it said the coolant level was low so i put some water in ... and it took a whole kettle of water to fill it. this morning it started first time but needed another kettles worth of water again. Got to work and just tried to start it again (a couple of hrs after arriving at work) and it wouldnt start again !!! doing the same thing and then it started up with the computers reset again, ohh and it needed another kettles worth of water, i cant see any spills on the floor though. The water resovoir has oil in it though which i have posted about before. I'm confused with this now any help is greatly appreciated. P.S. Fuse boxes look fine inside and just to be sure i sprayed WD40 in there just incase.

Have you checked that the battery connections are nice & tight, if they are, then it does sound as though the battery is at fault. This behaviour is quite common on the Scorp when the battery is starting to fail But I'd say that the battery is the least of your problems if there is oil in the coolant. Have you checked the engine oil, or the autobox (if you have one) oil for water mixing ?

Sounds like your battery is on its way out, I have had a similar problem in the past. You say you cant see any water spillage, do you have a cover on the underneath of your engine? Because this may hide any water spilling onto the floor while the car is standing. Also, I remember with my old cossie, my water pump sprung a leak, even tho it was only a small hole. It lost a lot of water while the car was driving. hth Dan

Cheers for the replies folks, just checked the engine oil and the auto oil and their both looking fine .. no water in there just seems to be in the water resovoir Battery connections are on nice n tight ... I think it has got a cover underneath and when i just had a look down the left of the engine i could see a small puddle of oil sitting on what looks to be the cover underneath the engine. I guess i best take it to a garage, i just dont know if i can face the bill though !

I am 98% convinced, having read your post, that all you need is a new battery. Make sure you get one that's man enough for the Scorpio. These cars have a lot of electrics, and if they aren't powered up properly (especially when starting), then you'll have the problems that you've mentioned. You'll probably find that, after re-connecting the new battery, and running the car for about 10 miles, (which lets the ECU re-set itself), that it's a completely different beast. It WILL run a bit lumpy while it does this. Get your local accessory shop to do a discharge test on your existing battery, and you'll probably find it's shot. Most garages know very little about these cars.....but they will convince you that they do!! Be careful of friendly, but rip-off garages. If you have a garage guy that you can trust, then well and good, but otherwise I'd bet a pound to a penny that you'll find all the answers that you want, right here on the site. Just trying to save you a whole wad of dough

Hi again, Just had a mate look over it (he has a garage on an estate i work on) Whilst showing him it refused to start again and again had no water, anyway we eventually got it started. After showing him the colour of the oil (and saying how there was no water in there) about two mins later looking at the colour of the oil .... its creamy The cylendar head has gone, wether its cracked or just gasket gone im not sure, he's going to check compression for me tomorow then i will know. So it looks like a bye bye scorpio, anyone want to buy one ?

I think I would be inclined to get the head skimmed and fit a new gasket.

Yeah i read the advert and it says its limited to 0.5mm to 1mm. How much do you think is an acceptable price for getting the head skimmed and to fit a new gasket ?

Do it properly. New gasket and skimmed head. There's no point wasting money on quick fixes. A skim shouldn't cost more than about £45.00 and a new gasket depending on cost. If you have an engine shop nearby, then they might do it for a bit less than a garage, because the garage will take it there anyway, and then rebuild it, adding their percentage of course. Not a big DIY job if you have the time/tools and are careful. If your mate can do it for £200 then I'd let him.
