Low oil pressure at top of engine (24V)

My 95 Cossie with 82000 miles has developed a permanent timing chain rattle so I took it to a local garage. They came back to me with the news that oil pressure was very low at the top end of the motor so the tensioner wasn't taking up the slack. Presumably the pressure lower down is adequate as the warning light stays off. Can anybody please advise me on my course of action? I don't really want to embark on open wallet surgery and hope there might be something to try before we look at a strip down.

check oil pump pick up pipe strainer, very common to get blocked, even with bits of timing chain tensioner / guide.
