50/50 - I might be breaking my R-reg 2.3 Ultima

Recently, on startup for a few seconds, it started making a horrible grinding noise which coming from one or other pulley on the aux drive belt.  Figuring it was the air con pulley, I removed the aircon clutch and fired her up.  The noise was still there Sad

Right now it won't start - I think the battery has finally given up the ghost as charging it overnight doesn't really make a difference.  However I have to keep in the back of my mind that the engine may have siezed.  Cry

I'll try a new battery on it tonight and if it fires up I'll try to fix the grindy noise, if it doesn't I'll be breaking it / selling for spares.

Anyone want anything from an Auto R-reg 2.3 Ultima?  The interior is in very good nick and I'm tempted to turn the seats (front & rear) into living room furniture as if the car goes I'd miss those comfy seats too much! lol Smiley

I'm based near Worcester btw.

While you had the belt off did you check all the other pulley wheels for tightness, noise or movement ?....they should all spin easily & smoothly, & none should be difficult to turn  Smiley

I didn't need to take the belt off to get at the bit of clutch assembly I've removed (and it isn't THE pulley so the belt can't come off anythnig - I'm just without air con at the moment 'till (if) I put it back together).

I couldn't get the belt off, well, I might have been able to but then I doubt I'd have got it back on.  I might try that though, now that I know it's not the air con clutch (could still be the pulley though I guess).

What worries me is the expense of replacing whatever item is making the horrible noise - Ford (Sheffield, where I was when the noise started) told me it'd cost me an hours labour just for them to look at it, which I wasn't amused by.  They then said an air con clutch assembly is £125 + fitting + VAT and the air con compressor/pulley assembly would be £400 + fitting + VAT + empty & refill the refigerant.

I know there are cheaper places, but the car didn't cost me a fortune and TBH I can't justify spending hundreds on it.  It's a shame as it's only done 77k miles and for the year I've had it, it's served me well, but a change in circumstances means I need a change in car anyway, so don't really want to go spending much on sorting out whatever this issue is. Sad

I figured breaking it would be the best thing to do do maximise the money I can get back? (or alternatively saving the hassle and offering it for sale as-is; after all, it's still got MOT till December).

If it's DIY-fixable, great! but I'm not holding my breath... Sad

Getting the belt off is easy...just put a 15mm spanner/socket on the tensioner pulley & push down clockwise. It may be a little stiff, but it should move & the belt will become slack. Refit the belt in the same way  Smiley

Be sure to take a note of the way the belts runs around the pulleys first  Wink

If you find what the problem is, then put a post in the wanted section & someone is bound to have a good second hand part  Smiley

Sad

Could the grinding noise have been anything to do with the starter motor/ ringgear? or coud be the idler wheel etc, when it was running was the noise there all the time or just when starting.
Seems a shame to break the car for what may be a simple fault, I stripped my old car which had nothing wrong with it and I have ended up with a garage full of parts which nobody seems to want...  Huh

Hi everyone - thanks for the advice but in the end I sold it to a mate who used to work as a Ford Mechanic.  He reckoned he could get £450 for it at a breakers but on the off chance he could fix it, took it off my hands directly.

I couldn't refuse really, I was thinking the worst (possible engine seizure imminent) and as I bought ot for £600 a year ago it didn't owe me anything but getting £450 for it Vs a potential next to nohting if it did seize, I jumped at the opportunity.

It was a great car, and could well probably have been something simple to fix meaning it would haev gone on and on..  but ultimately it's not that suitible for my needs any more (I was doing lots of motorway driving, but won't be soon) and I needed something more practical.  I would say more economical, but was always amazed that I could drag 38mpg out of it on a town->motorway->town run.

Nice car, the comfort and luxury will be missed, but for me - it was time for a change.

Bye Scorpio! Sad (or 'Sulkio' as I affectionately started to call it recently when it occasionally refused to start Wink )

Apparently it was simply the starter motor, but I'm not 100% convinced.
