Right Way Up

This isnt a problem as such but i wasent sure where to post it. I was just wondering why the speedo and rev counter unit have to be kept upright when you remove them.

I think there is some sort of liquid set up inside them although I've tried one upside down for a few days and it didnt seem to make any difference.

Isn't it also because the needles drop over the needle stops if held upside-down ?
