intermitant noise from rear end

Hi all,
I hope someone can help me with my problem,I have a 2.3 estate. Just recently I have been getting a very weird sqeaking noise from the drivers side rear, this only happens when the car has been run for a while, and never when it is cold.
The noise has progessively got worse, thought it was a wheel bearing, had them checked a ok.
Have had a look underneath and the only thing I can see is what looks like a drop link fitting on the roll bar ,the bushes seem to be shot.
Would this cause the noise I am experiencing, also the drivers side rear body to wheel gap is 10cm lower than the passenger side Sad.
Hope some of you guys.
 can help me with this
cheers Bob

Hi bobbit, yes worn bushes can cause squeaks/knocks etc,but the fact that one side is lower than the other (providing it,s on level ground) may suggest a sagging or maybe broken spring.definatly worth further investigation m8

Does the squeak seem to be with wheel revolution ?....if so, then possibly the pads are sticking & starting to squeak when they get hot or the wheel bearing is on the way out  Undecided

When they checked the bearing, how did they do it ?....merely spinning a jacked up wheel & checking for movement may not show up a bearing problem (no vehicle weight on the bearing)...especially if the bearing is cold when checked.

If the bearing has dried out, it may seem fine when cold, but when hot, it will start to squeak. The more worn it gets, the worse the sound gets....to the point it will squeal & grind on the hub. It also seems worse when cornering...i.e. left hand corner, right hand rear bearing will squeak & vice versa  Wink

If the squeak is more to do with the suspension moving up & down then I don't think a worn drop link would cause this.....my experience of worn drop links is a clonk when cornering  Smiley

Maybe rear anti-roll bar bushes or worn suspension bushes, or even a weak spring ?  Smiley

But if one side really does sit 10cm lower than the other side on level ground, then I'd be looking for a broken spring or leaking shock absorber  Smiley

Hope this helps  Wink

Hi Guys
Thanks for your input, yes the car does sit lowe on one side,so looks like spring, theres also a sort of grinding sound metal to metal, that only happens now and again.
Is changing a spring a big job?
Thanks again

When My wheel bearing went the only indication I got was a squeek from it . NEVER any play in the bearing when checked. even changed the pads thinkong it was that ..

Get the bearing checked ASAP IMHO before loking anywhere else.

Hi!

The spring job is quite a task to do, but it's mandatory if you've
got a broken spring. You may be able to get the spring out
with a pair of spring pressers, but it is easier to do it like the
manual says. That means dropping down the the whole
system in back.

The drop link in the stabilizer bar could also make your
car lean on the side where the stabilizer is not connected.

You can visually check wheter your spring is broken by lifting
the car up from under the differential. Lift it up so that both
wheels roll freely. Don't go under the car unless it's firmly
standing on jacks, we don't want you to appear in the
news as: one dead under the scorpio.
When the car is up, both springs are extended as far as they
can extend and if one of them is broken, you will see it. If one
of them is deadtired, that cannot be seen like this.

A dead shock absorber cannot drop your car down 10cm ...
unless... it's got something to do with a selflevelling system...

Dead or broken wheel bearing makes your tyres wear
unevenly and when it is in it'sworst stage, your wheel
may be tilted into an ugly angle. Surely you will hear
grinding sound when driving slowly. When the wheel
is hoisted up and rolls freely, the sound may not be
so apparent.

I've had the bearing problem in the back and I also
had to renew the rear wheel hub as well. That's another
nice noicemaker.

The rearsprings have to be changed in pairs, the bearings
can be done one at the time, but it is recomended to
change both of them at the same go. Otherwise you
might end up doing the job again on the other side.
