Hi folks, joined the forum after purchasing my '96 24v ultima for the princely sum of £400 1st off i had to replace the rad as it had been clonked on a speed cushion or something by the previous owner 2nd the water pump is uttering it last, so the new one is about to go on when i have a moment 3rd the o/d light kept blinking at me and the speedo was reading wrong and also it keeps selecting whatever gear it fancies in rapid sucession (not fun when you're doing 60 and it suddenly goes for 1st!) also, keeps stalling out at lights, so again after consulting the fantastic fault finder on here, i replaced the VSS (it looked broken, the car has done 154000 miles) hasn't sorted the problem though, any ideas what else it could be? very occasionally the o/d light stops blinking and it behaves itself, selecting the correct gear smoohly, then it goes back to fu-barred mode the only way i can get it to stop swapping gears is by driving at 140mph everywhere! please don't say its a bin job, its such a lovely car when its being good

Is the oil level okay & if so, what colour is it ? Have you tried cleaning the MAF ?.....a dirty MAF is known to affect gear changes Hope this helps, & welcome to the site

Sounds more like a wiring issue if you have changed the VSS. I understand the gearbox loom is a bit of a so and so to get at and change/repair. I am sure others will give you more info , very soon .
