AM signals are picked up by a solenoid type aerial within the head unit itself. It could indicate an internal wiring failure of the unit.

By unit, I mean inside the stereo itself. AM signals are of a lower frequency and higher amplitude and longer wavelength than FM signals so require a small coil as an antenna. I new stereo should solve it. I'm not sure on how you would go about eliminating the fault other than having the stereo repaired or trying a different one. But I'd bet some ££s it's the stereo itself.

lub-o-rific. It has always been my experience that I can receive FM signals through a rusty nail, but need a much longer aerial and even a signal amplifier to get AM,as I say this is my experience not radio expertise. GOZZ.
