Erratic Revving

Hi all, just bought a P reg Ultima auto and on the drive home noticed the rev counter was all over the place. Kept a nice steady 50mph on the journey but the rev counter was going into the red and back down to around 3000 all the time. Noticed if I put my foot down the box kind of slipped with slower uptake....its got 97K on the clock.....any ideas? Thanks team.
